HAVE A WILD TIME AT FRANKLIN ZOO

WELCOME TO JUMBO!

Jumbo asleep on sand pile afer sand bathJumbo the elephant, New Zealand's only African elephant, has retired from the circus and is starting a new life at Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary. She has settled into to her new facility which has given her space to explore, toys to play with, sand pits for dust baths and wallows so she can enjoy being an elephant. We now need to build Jumbo a barn, with areas under cover, heating, warm water for wash downs and storage space plus a tractor so we can continue to shovel piles of dirt and sand into her enclosure for her to play in. Please help us to help Jumbo. You can make donations to her retirement fund through our office, sending a cheque or by making a direct deposit. Please download the form for more details.

Emu
Second biggest bird in the world. Our emu can run up yo 50km per hour and each stride can be as long as 3 metres. Because they have no teeth, emus eat stones and pebbles to grind up their food. Imagine that! Listen carefully, and that drum beat you hear is probably one emu chatting to another. Emu Dads look after the eggs until they hatch and then look after the young chicks for the next two years.
